*Compare the adapter against the base model before giving it a place in production. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

A character LoRA should keep your original design recognizable across the portraits, poses and outfits your game needs. It is a versioned adapter for a compatible image model, and it earns a place in production only if it improves on the base model and your reference-editing workflow. A character who only stays recognizable in one pose still leaves your artists with plenty of repair work.

Use ordinary, non-explicit artwork of a clearly adult original fictional character, or photographs whose subjects and rights holders have specifically authorized the intended training and release. This guide supplies a planning and evaluation procedure, not a trained model, sample dataset or completed benchmark. Follow the chosen architecture’s official training recipe; do not carry one recipe’s learning rates or memory assumptions into every other model.

## 1. Define the missing behavior and success criteria

![Flow from Missing behavior to Baseline to Success test, with Baseline highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-1-1.svg)

*A recorded baseline makes face drift and costume errors easier to compare after training. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Start with a test of the base model alone. Include neutral portraits, profile and three-quarter views, two ordinary expressions, a seated pose, a prop interaction and a second approved outfit. Write down the failures training should reduce: face drift, missing costume details, an inconsistent silhouette or a character whose identity falls apart outside one background.

Set acceptance criteria before seeing adapter results. The character must retain the approved facial and body structure; poses and costumes must remain controllable; major anatomy defects must not obscure an action; and the finished assets must work at game scale. Decide which failures allow manual finishing and which require rejection. A memorable portrait is a poor substitute for these checks.

## 2. Confirm rights to train and to release

![Flow from Training rights to Model terms to Release rights, with Release rights highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-2-1.svg)

*Confirm adapter publication rights as well as permission to train on the images. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

For each source image, record who created it, where it came from, what permission you have and which uses are allowed. Permission to use a commissioned illustration in a game does not automatically cover training, publishing the adapter or redistributing the source image. Agree those uses explicitly with the rights holder. For a real person, obtain informed authorization for the intended identity training and publication rather than treating a public photograph as consent.

Read the base-model license, component terms and trainer license separately. Some bases restrict commercial adaptation, scale, territory or redistribution even when their outputs have separate permissions. If generated images enter the training set, also review the originating model’s synthetic-data and adaptation terms. Keep this evidence with the dataset manifest and choose an eligible base before paying for a training run.

## 3. Curate variation without contaminating the design

![Flow from Identity to Variation to Dataset, with Identity highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-3-1.svg)

*Vary pose, lighting and background while keeping the approved character design consistent. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Begin with a small, deliberately varied set: front and profile faces, different camera distances, ordinary body poses, lighting changes and several neutral backgrounds. Every image should show the same approved design clearly enough to judge its features. Remove conflicting proportions, near-identical crops, blurry faces, unexplained costume changes and artifacts. A larger inconsistent dataset can teach the wrong character faster.

Keep identity separate from incidental scene details. If every image has the same jacket and background, the adapter may bind both to the character. Include variation that faithfully represents what the project needs, and caption the attributes that change. Treat any suggested image count as a planning estimate. Coverage and consistency matter more than reaching a fixed number.

## 4. Caption observable content and reserve a clean validation set

![Flow from Captions to Training set to Validation set, with Training set highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-4-1.svg)

*Accurate captions help distinguish the character from the pose, outfit and background. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Use a consistent identity token or name as supported by the selected recipe, then accurately describe pose, crop, clothing, expression and background. Check automatic captions: a wrong label can teach the very failure you are trying to fix. Follow the base model’s caption conventions, and check whether trigger-tag syntax from another ecosystem applies before using it.

Reserve validation images and prompts before training. Where possible, split by distinct source views or sessions so a near-duplicate crop cannot leak into the validation set. Leave some pose, costume and lighting combinations out of training. Use the final test to see whether the adapter can carry the character into new ordinary situations without simply repeating memorized images.

## 5. Select a supported trainer and pin the full configuration

![Flow from Architecture to Trainer to Configuration, with Configuration highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-5-1.svg)

*Save the exact trainer and configuration so another run can reproduce the setup. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Choose a trainer built for the architecture: for example, the Diffusers SDXL DreamBooth-LoRA example, a supported AI Toolkit configuration or the base publisher’s recommended trainer. Verify support for the exact model and adapter export format before starting. An SD1.5 LoRA script cannot be assumed to train Qwen editing or FLUX.2 correctly.

Record the trainer commit, environment versions, base model revision and hash, encoder/VAE versions, target modules, resolution or buckets, rank and alpha, learning rate and schedule, optimizer, batch size and accumulation, mixed precision, seed, caption handling and validation frequency. Save the configuration instead of relying on memory of the GUI. Each architecture and distillation branch needs its own recipe; use that implementation’s documented defaults as a starting point.

## 6. Run a bounded first training experiment

![Flow from Small run to Checkpoint to Review, with Small run highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-6-1.svg)

*Use the first small run to catch data and memory problems before committing to a long run. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Check data loading, captions, crops and a validation image before committing to a long run. Set cost and runtime budgets, save intermediate checkpoints and keep logs. Measure actual memory use with the selected resolution and optimizer. Training and inference have different memory demands; a small adapter download tells you little about the GPU memory needed to train it.

Begin with the supported recipe, then change one decision at a time in later runs. Compare checkpoints instead of assuming the last one is best. Higher rank or more training may increase capacity while also tying the character to unwanted details. When the dataset contains a mistake, correct it and save a new version. A larger rank can hide a data problem without solving it.

## 7. Compare adapter strength, generalization and overfitting

![Flow from Strength to Generalization to Overfitting, with Generalization highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-7-1.svg)

*Test identity and instruction control separately; recognition alone can hide a rigid pose or outfit. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Run the same recorded validation briefs through the base model alone and with several adapter strengths. Use the same seeds where meaningful, and review multiple attempts so one lucky image does not decide the result. Judge identity retention and instruction control separately. A recognizable face locked to the training jacket or pose is a poor fit for a character who needs new scenes.

Watch for overfitting: repeated backgrounds, rigid compositions, near-copies of source images, resistance to a new outfit and artifacts that increase with adapter strength. Check for underfitting too, such as identity disappearing in profile views or on small faces. Compare an earlier checkpoint, improve captions or rebalance the data before extending training. Choose the candidate that meets the asset requirements you set at the start.

## 8. Validate the adapter in the shipping art pipeline

![Flow from Adapter to Art workflow to Game asset, with Game asset highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-8-1.svg)

*Verify the exported adapter in the workflow that will produce the game assets. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Export in the intended format, load the adapter in a clean supported workflow and reproduce the validation set. Check exact base compatibility, trigger behavior, strength, aspect ratio and any required encoder settings. If you train on an undistilled base and run on a distilled model, follow a documented compatible route and test the transfer.

Finish several accepted assets, including the difficult held-out cases, and inspect them in the engine. Record manual correction time and failures to measure the full production cost. Keep an artist-approved reference workflow as a fallback. The adapter needs to improve repeatability or reduce correction work. Final art review, alpha finishing and source files remain part of the job.

## 9. Package a truthful release and preserve the evidence

![Flow from Weights to Recipe to Release record, with Weights highlighted in orange.](https://bestadultgames.io/images/developer-guides/train-evaluate-release-character-lora-section-9-1.svg)

*A releasable adapter needs compatibility details, limitations and the required upstream notices. Best Adult Games · original diagram*

Confirm permission to redistribute the adapter and any included examples before publishing. Include a model card naming the exact base and supported loader, training purpose, compatible format, trigger or caption conventions, recommended tested strengths, limitations, dataset-rights summary, model version, checksum and required upstream notices. Only describe evaluation as your own recorded test if you actually ran it.

Do not bundle raw training photographs, confidential commissioned artwork or personal metadata just because you can share the adapter. Keep the private manifest, permissions, configurations and full evaluation history for maintenance. Review rights again if the release scope changes. Give improvements a new version and a reproducible comparison so downstream developers can judge the effect on artwork they already approved.

## Key decisions

- Identify a specific failure in the base workflow before training.
- Confirm training and redistribution rights for the images and base model.
- Keep the design consistent across varied data, and reserve distinct poses for validation.
- Compare intermediate checkpoints and adapter strengths against the base model.
- Document compatibility, limitations, rights and checksums in the release.
