A chemistry experiment gives Jane a penis and turns familiar relationships into unfamiliar territory. The Wentford University sophomore is still a woman attracted to women; her transformed body and heightened desire bring sexual power, embarrassment and new possibilities for intimacy. Having a HARD Time gets its strongest charge from that awkward combination. The premise is ridiculous, but the feelings it disturbs can be convincing.
Animated sex is a substantial attraction, especially when anticipation has had time to build between people who know each other. The game also plunges into grief, illness and family taboos, sometimes with little warning. Its five released Steam episodes contain appealing romances and worthwhile porn. They leave the main story open, however, and its continuation remains uncertain.
Chemistry with people Jane already knows

Jane's lifelong best friend is involved in the experiment and its fallout. That gives the attraction a history: a familiar bond becomes charged with desire, awkwardness and discovery. The erotic appeal comes partly from watching the women renegotiate a relationship they thought they understood. Jane's new anatomy provides the fantasy; their existing closeness gives it feeling.
The wider cast brings different backgrounds and problems into Jane's orbit. Lisa's painful history adds weight to the friendships around her, while Hannah's songs give her a particularly strong emotional presence. These details help the women feel as though they have lives between sex scenes. Posts, profiles and comments on the phone extend that social world, with humor in the cast's public exchanges.
Several women can be pursued, but some do not want to share. Romance choices therefore involve competing desires, including the possibility of disappointing someone. Individuality suffers when too many characters use the same comic voice. Jane's perspective can also slip into familiar male wish fulfillment, leaving too little curiosity about how this particular woman experiences her changed body.
Animated sex, with a tendency to overstay

Still 3D renders and animated sequences deliver an unapologetically exaggerated fantasy: big boobs, an extravagantly endowed protagonist and varied women and situations. The stronger encounters follow a relationship beat, giving the animation some anticipation to spend. Jane's discovery and her partner's response can make the scene feel like an event in their relationship rather than a prize handed over at the end of it.
Loop replay and a gallery make it easy to return to the stronger encounters. Player control lies in choices and access to authored sequences: decisions shape the relationship and which scenes become available, while the animation supplies the action. That is a useful arrangement for a visual novel whose sexual presentation is a major part of the appeal.
The presentation improves beyond the early material, but awkward expressions and clipping can still deflate a sexy moment. Some sequences run past the point where repetition adds pleasure, especially when the written reactions repeat too. Vocal songs and the phone's music player give the soundtrack a more consistent personality. Those songs do not amount to a fully voiced script.
Romance choices carry more weight than stats

Larger choices affect relationships and can open or shut off sexual scenes. Smaller decisions alter dialogue, while confidence and charisma mostly influence Jane's responses. Access to the important romances rests on decisions rather than a stat raised through repetitive chores. The main story stays fairly connected in these episodes; more substantial route divergence belongs to the game's planned later development.
Weekend activities introduce side stories and new characters, with stars marking progress. There are limited opportunities to pursue them, so time spent on one activity leaves others for another run. That gives replay a purpose, but it also rations access to the side cast. Someone interested in several of these relationships may find the current episodes frustratingly restrictive.
Hidden idols or trophies create a separate collectible hunt: a complete set of five unlocks a secret scene. These are optional, non-canon still-image sequences, separate from the developing romances. Searching can break the flow of reading, and a missed trophy may send the player back through earlier material. The bonuses offer extra porn, but they add neither animated story encounters nor another main romance. Decisions about whom Jane wants are more compelling than checking the scenery for a collectible.
The drama sometimes asks too much of the mood

A character's history can give affection weight and make the sex more intimate. Having a HARD Time sometimes earns that connection, finding substance in relationships built around an absurd transformation. Knowing why someone matters to Jane makes their decision to undress more interesting.
Elsewhere, a joke, a traumatic revelation and a horny scene arrive too close together for any of them to settle. Self-harm, parental neglect and terminal illness bring a weight the scientific sex fantasy cannot casually shrug off. Piling distress onto a character can feel manipulative when the writing allows too little room to absorb it. Emotional depth helps the cast; abrupt mood changes undermine the intimacy it is meant to support.
The package warning also identifies incest and non-consensual sex. Family-sex options are part of the taboo appeal, and their development can feel abrupt. Warmth elsewhere does not make every encounter reassuring, and the presence of choices does not erase coercion. This mix of affection, transgression and distress demands a broader tolerance for difficult material than the animated sex alone might suggest.
An appealing cast without an ending

The characters, sex and replay tools give the delivered package value. The hoped-for future is a much weaker reason to pay. These five episodes can suit someone happy to enjoy an unfinished futanari romance; anyone waiting for the main story or activity routes to reach a conclusion should keep waiting. The sex can pay off well before the story does.
At the October 2026 check, the Steam base listed a US price of $13.99, with explicit content included and no separate adult patch. Windows, macOS and Linux were listed, with no paid DLC. Released episode updates have been included in the purchase, and the developer intends one continuing game rather than separately sold seasons. At that price, the purchase rests on the episodes already available.
Episode 5 arrived in August 2025, followed by a September translation patch, but the larger story still has no conclusion. Delivery of the planned weekend finales, including fifth-star sexual rewards, remains unverified. That is a particularly awkward gap for activities built around repeated visits and rising progress stars. Individual scenes can satisfy while the relationships leading to them remain unresolved.
Verdict
Having a HARD Time's five released episodes are worth playing for their romances and animated sex, with the unfinished story accepted as part of the deal. Jane's transformation puts desire into established friendships, and consequential choices give that fantasy some emotional bite. Replay tools and vocal music help the stronger scenes linger; rough early renders, overlong sequences and abrupt misery make others drag. Substantial threads remain open, with the ending and planned weekend finales still uncertain. The appeal is in the intimacy already delivered. Anyone who needs those relationships to reach a conclusion should wait.

Questions before you play
Is Having a HARD Time finished?
No. The reviewed English Steam Early Access edition contains episodes 1–5. Episode 5 arrived in August 2025, but the main story has no final conclusion. Future episodes and planned weekend finales are excluded from the rating.
Does the Steam version need an adult patch or subscription?
No separate adult patch or subscription is listed for the Steam base; explicit content is included. Its US list price was $13.99 at the October 2026 check. Released episode updates were included in the purchase. The developer intends future episodes to be included too, but their delivery remains uncertain.
Can the futanari content be disabled, and do all partners accept a harem?
Jane's body change is central to the story and cannot be disabled. Several relationships can be pursued, but some women do not want to share. The package also warns of incest, non-consensual sex, violence and other heavy themes.
Do stats decide which sex scenes become available?
Important choices can open or prevent scenes and affect relationships. Confidence, charisma and other stats mostly alter smaller dialogue responses. Major divergence follows decisions rather than stat thresholds.
How do the secret scenes unlock?
Clicking hidden idols or trophies and completing a set of five unlocks a corresponding secret scene in the gallery. These optional, non-canon sequences use lewd still images and sit outside the main story. They are separate from its animated encounters.
Are the weekend activities complete, including their final sex rewards?
Delivery of those finales remains unverified. Weekend activities are side stories that introduce characters and use stars to mark progress. The developer planned their fifth-star finales for a separate update after Episode 5. Exploring a different selection of activities can require another playthrough of the available episodes.
