Production tools

Choose tools for your adult game.

Find an engine for a game built around dialogue, software for character art or an editor for voice lines. Filter by production area, AI use and recommendation tier, then check each tool’s intended use and conditions.

Ranks are recommendations for the task described, based on reviewed documentation. Model ranks cover non-explicit development work. We have not run practical benchmarks. Check content policies and commercial terms separately. How the ranks work →

Aseprite

Art · Non-AI workflow

S · Pixel art and sprite animation

A strong choice for pixel characters and animation loops in a retro adult game. Layers and onion skinning support frame-by-frame work, while sprite-sheet export helps get the results into your game. Plan for the time it takes to draw and refine each frame.

You may sell your own artwork, including work made with a self-compiled copy. Aseprite's EULA restricts redistribution of the application and grants no rights to third-party artwork you import.

Paid ready-to-use builds; source compilation for your own use under the EULA.

Blender

Art · Non-AI workflow

S · Custom editable 3D assets

A strong choice for developers building original 3D assets and keeping editable source files for later revisions. The free download still leaves the modelling work to you or your artist.

Blender's GPL covers the application, not your original artwork. Imported assets keep their own rights and licenses. Distributing Blender itself or publishing add-ons that use its Python API carries separate GPL obligations.

Free; open source

Krita

Art · Non-AI workflow

S · Illustrated characters and backgrounds

Choose Krita for hand-painted character portraits, scene illustrations and backgrounds. Its brushes, layers and frame-by-frame raster animation suit a 2D art workflow, especially for short loops. Longer animations can consume substantial RAM.

Krita's GPLv3 license allows commercial use; it does not put your original artwork under the GPL. Check the separate licenses for third-party brushes, fonts and imported images.

Free and open source from krita.org; optional paid Steam and Microsoft Store downloads support development.

Daz Studio and Daz assets

Art · Non-AI workflow

A · Pre-rendered character scenes

A strong fit for visual novels that reuse a cast and sets across pre-rendered scenes and animations.

Finished 2D renders are covered by the standard asset license, subject to each product’s restrictions. Check those terms for your intended adult scenes; shipping the underlying 3D data needs separate permissions.

B · Daz 3D assets shipped in a runtime

A conditional choice for games that animate and render Daz assets in real time: every included asset must be cleared for that use.

Interactive licenses are product-specific and unavailable for some assets. Check before building around a character or set, and protect the licensed 3D data inside the finished game.

Software and asset costs depend on the products and licenses you choose.
